Enhancing Your Home’s Curb Appeal

We've officially stepped into the month of June, and our favorite time of the year is finally here. The annuals, herbs, and vegetables have been planted, our backyard entertaining spaces have been spruced, and we are spending time outdoors with friends and neighbors on a daily basis. These long days of summer mean we are often outside our homes more than in, making it the perfect time to give your front door style some attention.

Today on the blog, we're outlining our step-by-step playbook to elevating your home's curb appeal for this season and the months ahead. As they say, first impressions are everything, and we've got you covered with landscaping, lighting, accessories, and more.

There’s nothing like pulling up to a home with well-designed landscaping. It sets the tone for all your exterior plans, plus it’s a chance to embrace your home’s outdoor square footage. Don’t have a natural green thumb? That’s where professional help comes into play.

A few years back, we decided to bring in landscaping help, and it was a total game-changer. Working with a specialist who knows their stuff meant we could select the right plants for our yard and skip the endless hours of DIY research. From our experience, we found that a great landscape artist will not only ensure your home’s curb appeal is up to par but will save you from costly mistakes in the process.

Hot tip: nothing detracts from a home’s exterior faster than outdated lighting. I know it’s easy to feel intimidated by the idea of replacing fixtures, but with a little patience (and a trusted electrician on hand), the process is way smoother than you might think.

As you select your lighting, make sure to choose pieces that complement your home’s architectural style. Take this exterior bracket light by Davey Lighting, for example. Its clean lines and classic construction allow it to blend well with a wide range of modern and traditional homes while bringing a fresh look to any front door. Bonus points for installing a statement pendant like this one.

If there's ever a place to go big with (living) accessories, it's your front door. I love incorporating a pair of symmetrical planters, a single large-scale plant, or a minimalist wreath that can easily transition through the year. Remember that you don't have to go overboard with the seasonal decor. Simply use fresh florals and greenery to bring a sense of vibrance to your exterior and serve as a warm welcome to visitors coming through the door.

Much like interior styling, front door accessories are what help tie a look together. Everything from your house numbers to mailbox to layered rugs and doormats is an opportunity to up your curb appeal and complement the overall style of your home. I particularly love using pieces that give visitors a hint at what’s to come inside for a cohesive blend of indoor and outdoor design. As always, keep visual scale in mind as you curate your accessories, and don’t be afraid to mix and match until you get the look just right.
