As I continue working through the events of the last few months, which unfolded here in Minneapolis and on a national scale, I feel so committed to expanding my knowledge and support of Black-owned businesses. My eyes have never felt more open to the injustices the Black community faces today, and this movement for change is much more than a trendy hashtag could ever capture. Within our home, my husband and I are continuing lots of education and exploration with our kids about racism, and I’m doing my own fair share of learning (and unlearning) in the process.

That said, this monthly edit is a continuation of supporting our BIPOC design community, featuring shoppable finds from some incredible Black-owned brands I’ve come to know and love. I’m sharing a well-rounded mix of current favorites for the home, recipes we’re making on repeat, and a timely novel that’s begging for a spot on your to-be-read list.

I’ve received so many glowing recommendations for Clare paint, and after trying it for myself, I couldn’t agree more! Clare is a Black female-owned paint company, and their well-curated color selection is every interior designers’ dream.

Speaking of Black female-owned businesses, I recently purchased some art from Monica Lewis, and I can’t wait to see it in action. RUN don’t walk to her site because her new pieces will sell out super fast. Just in case you need further convincing, Beyoncé gave her work a public shout- out, so you know she’s definitely one to watch.

After spending far too many summers basking in the sun as a lifeguard, I’m now hyper-aware of how important a daily SPF is for protecting my skin. I’ve been searching for high and low for just the right sunscreen and finally landed on all things SuperGoop. It’s weightless, scentless, and layers beautifully under foundation. Along with sunscreen, I gave their eye cream a try and it’s totally genius! I’m back in the hustle of busy workdays, so their easy subscribe feature is saving me big time.

The hot, hot temperatures have finally made their way to Minneapolis, and I’m 100% here for it. To celebrate the season and enjoy all those incredible summer flavors, we’ve made this skirt steak salad more times than I can count. It’s easy, fresh, and pairs perfectly this tomato, cucumber, and basil salad that’s also been heavily featured on our family’s summer menu rotation.

This summer, I began an ongoing commitment to read at least one book a month by an author of color. July’s official pick is An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, and oh my goodness WOW. It’s received countless awards from all the major literary outlets, and it’s not hard to see why.

Here at the JMI studio, we’ve been keeping busy on Pinterest to gather all kinds of inspiration for our upcoming projects. I promise that soon we’ll get our current work properly photographed, but we’re loving all the digital inspiration available at our fingertips in the meantime!

Laura and I are officially working in our office (WOOT!), and I think this little flowerpot lamp may make an appearance on Laura’s desk. Redesigning our workspace has been a serious exercise in careful curation and has allowed me to flex some extra creativity along the way. This past month, I spent a decent amount of time searching for pieces to complete our space, but I’ve also been updating the favorite finds section on the JMI website. If you happen to be in the midst of a home refresh, you’ll find a bunch of new items featured on my shop page!
