The Yond Guide to Small Accessories

As a full-service interior design studio, most projects involve playing the long game. There are construction plans to consider and ordering timelines to juggle, which means these projects are certainly not an overnight process. That said, we’ve also found that giving your home a fresh look doesn’t always require a significant overhaul.

We love discovering ways to bring new life to a space in every shape and form. Small accessories like mirrors, lighting, hardware, and textiles help pull a room together. And the best part? There’s no huge time investment or construction costs required. We’re constantly adding to our shop page and favorites boards on Pinterest with selections in every category. After all, you don’t have to start over from scratch to transform a space. A few well-chosen pieces can go a long way, and we’ll show you how.

LIGHTING

We tend to start with lighting whenever a room is beginning to feel dated or a bit flat. In particular, table and floor lamps are such an easy swap with no hardwiring involved. From investment pieces like this statement marble table lamp to small-scale pleated table lamps like this unlikely find, a few lighting updates can go a long way. Also, don’t forget that lighting isn’t just for the living areas, beds, and baths. Adding a small table lamp on the kitchen countertop can change the look entirely.

TEXTILES

As seasons change, we love updating our textiles. This can include throw blankets, pillow covers, bedding—you name it. With fall right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to add rich color tones in your textile lineup. Don’t be afraid to play with pattern or even fabric options. You’ll be surprised how much a new bed quilt or velvet lumbar can update an entire room.

MIRRORS

Designing with mirrors is an insider trick of the trade. Strategically-placed mirrors can make a small room feel more open, and they’re a great way to fill empty wall space when needed. We love looking for interesting shapes and features like leather strap details. Try swapping out your entryway mirror for an instant update that makes a big impact.

HARDWARE

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: hardware is the finishing touch on cabinetry, and it’s important to get it just right. Changing out knobs and pulls couldn’t be easier and is the perfect small project for any DIY skill level. We even devoted an entire post to cabinet hardware to help get you started.

ODDS + ENDS

Last but not least, the small accessories we love most are the unassuming pieces that pull a space together. They’re often vintage treasures or handmade objects that help bring loads of character to your home. These are the pieces we love to collect over time and become a natural extension of your story.
