Round Top Recap Fall 2022

Last month we made a second trip to the Round Top Antiques Fair in Round Top, Texas. We made the trek for the first time in the spring, so this time we felt a little more equipped to take on the acres and acres of tents and get the most our of our few days. Sourcing unique and one-of-a-kind items for our clients is part of what sets our work apart, so these sourcing trips are hugely valuable — and a lot of (sweaty!) fun!

Located between Austin and Houston, Round Top is not exactly in a convenient spot for most of the US, but it’s a bucket list event for those of us who are interested in vintage and antique items. Roundtop is spread out in tents and fields that stretch for miles through the Texas Hill Country, making it a somewhat of a feat of endurance! After we began posting about our trip on Instagram, many of you reached out with questions, so I’m here today to share more about our trip and answer some of your queries.

More on Instagram: Part One, Part Two, and our Round Top Highlight.

Q: What is the best airport to fly into?

A: I always fly into Austin because I love any excuse to visit Austin and it’s very convenient to get to and from Round Top.

Q: DO YOU NEED A CAR OR CAN YOU UBER TO ROUND TOP?

A: You need a car, hands down. Uber service to and from Round Top might be unreliable and you need your own transportation to navigate Round Top. The fair is spread out over miles and miles and in order to see all the fields and vendors you have to have transportation.

Q: What about lodging?

A: We always travel with our design besties, so we look for a large house on Airbnb that can accommodate us all. We also keep our eyes and ears peeled throughout the year for new places to stay but in general Airbnb or VRBO are great places to start.

Q: Can you get good deals?

A: Ah, this is a very subjective question! A good deal is only a good deal if you think it is ;). So yes and no. Prices have skyrocketed as Round Top has become more popular, so there are not the ‘deals’ you might expect. That being said, everything is more expensive right now, so the costs to get items to and from Round Top (especially if it’s coming from Europe) are understandable. In short, I would say not as many great deals on huge furniture pieces, but lots of great opportunities for a wonderful find for smaller items like mirrors, accessories, rugs, etc. We go to Round Top because it’s fun, exciting and a way to finally see some vintage items in person. We think it’s well worth the experience.

Q: How do you get approval from your client?

A: This is tricky and we’ve tried it a few different ways but you have to have the right client for this type of shopping. It’s very much, you see it, you buy it. Most of the items are one of a kind - so you gotta pounce quickly. We talk to the clients we’re shopping for ahead of time to see if they’d be interested in us sending them pieces and if so, we just text them as we shop. It’s been a really easy and fun to shop that way and we landed a number of epic pieces for our upcoming wabi-sabi lake home project.

Q: How do you get your items home? Do they offer shipping?

A: So each vendor does not offer shipping, that is something you have to arrange ahead of time or when you’re onsite. There are several shippers that are in Round Top so it is not difficult to find a company to ship items. Shipping is not cheap, we’ve found it to be about 15% of your item cost, so be prepared!
